You don’t have to be sensitive about driving to be classified as a defensive driver. Driving skills are important to have on you while you are driving down the road. Defensive driving is helping keep the road safe and minimizing the cause of accidents. They still happen at times, but with defensive driving they can be avoided.
You are not alone on the road and drivers need to drive knowing that. Being a rude driver and expecting everyone to get out of your way while honking and flipping people off is not being a defensive driver and boarders on road rage which is against the law. More and more laws are now being passed about road rage, so watch out rude drivers!
It is defined as, “driving to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others…” as stated in the Standard for Safe Practices of Motor Vehicles. What this statement basically states in the term are that you should drive to save lives no matter what the actions are of others.
This is where police officers come in. You ever said to yourself, “Where is a cop when you need one.” Well that is what they are there for. People that do not drive defensively and following the laws of the road will eventually be found. That is why it is so important to be a defensive driver because not everyone else is and you have to watch out for them.
For the new driver a defensive driving course is included in the training a person will receive. They will learn to be precautionary with others on the road and anticipate others actions to avoid accidents. A good driving school will not only talk about defensive driving with their students but they will reinforce it what the students is actually behind the wheel.
If you have an accident or get a speeding violation a judge may require you take a course in defensive driving. This is good because you can get some training you should have had before. There are different schools you can go to, like traffic school, to complete the course and bring back to the judge to get your license back.
The most important thing you can teach your teenager to do while learning to drive is to drive defensively. Explain to them why it is so important and its cool to be a defensive driver. Also example it while you drive to kids at any age so it is second nature when they learn. Use near misses on the road to explain that is why being a safe driver is important.
Defensive driving is vital to the safety of all drivers on the road. Be aware of your surroundings and realize you are not the only person on the road. A person’s carelessness can cost more than a ticket. Many times it can cost someone their lives.
